A cracked head can give you the symptoms you describe. On the 0331, the head cracks way more often than the head gasket fails.

If this were mine, I would pull the valve cover and with a good light, perform a thorough inspection between cylinders 3-4, as many times, the crack can be seen with the naked eye.

And you really need to read this thread on the 0331 head. It is "required" reading for anybody with an 00-01 XJ.

Thx TJ,

I read the thread and all seems to be pointing in this direction. I will take off the valve cover tomorrow and let you know the results.

TJ,

Took off the valve cover and could not see a visable crack @ cyl 3 & 4. This would lead me to believe this may be a head gasket issue. I will still have the head looked at and also do a visual inspection on the bottom side of the head for cracks or fatigue. I also drained the oil for signs of coolant. I noticed the oil was not black, but a caramel color is this a indicator that the head gasket blew? I'll post again when I get to that road. Thanks for your input!!!!

If the oil is new from a recent change it won't be black, but more of a caramel color. When was your last oil change?

"new oil" color or caramel....big difference. Caramel would tend to be milky and pointing at HG. Especially if its been 3k since an oil change. I don't know bout you guys but after 3k my 94 I6 oil is slightly black..not caramel.

When you run a compression test, low pressure on two adjacent cylinders is usually a blown head gasket.

And not ALL cracks on the 0331 are visible. Keep that in mind. This is a fragile head.

if you don't find any cracks or anything like that, and it's still running hot, get some stuff called water wetter, or the royal purple equivalent, can't remember the exact name. the electric fan on my 93 doesn't work, and I notice when I sit for a few the temp starts to go up, I bought some of the royal purple coolant additive, and I stay right around 200-210...just an idea

I'm no expert, but at the suction end of the water pump, that line has one or two spring inside the tube to prevent it from collapsing under pressure. I read in other forums that shop mechanics make the mistake of not reinstalling these springs when replacing the water pump. Could that be the issue?

I'm with you on this. I have done many oil changes and have never had this color come out, only black. I will begin the disassembly of the head today.

Thx, if the head has a crack after inspection. Are they repairable? If not, whats the best replacement new or refurbished? Or, is there an alternative head?
