After reading about over heating, I am still not seeing anything that is related to my issue - so... here goes...
My 96 has been down way more than running.
I have a novel or two of new parts and its STILL having an overheating issue.
I have kept some intense records and tried just about everything, but I am truely at my breaking point with this heep.
Within my 30 minute test drive I experienced:
at idle: 10mins with creeping towards the redline
down hill: 1 line past 210 creeping to redline
"flat": creeping towards redline
uphill: almost grazing redline
interstate: white line before redline
before you ask:
No smokey exhaust
No milky antifreeze
NO idiot lights
engine intermittently will "buck" ONE time
still getting a carbon like soot out of the exhaust (NOT OIL)
on acceleration there is a "large inhale" like sound from the INTERIOR that is not concurrent with a vacuum leak.
has trouble going any faster than about 40
** current list of new parts already installed **
alternator
starter x2
flexplate
CPS
TPS
neutral safety switch
radiator
waterpump
thermostat
heater control valve
oil pressure sending unit
transmission inlet line
fuel filter
air filter
oil filter
plugs
wires
cap rotor
muffler back exhaust
ball joints
4 new tires
optional stuff:
radio
console
dual overhead rear speakers

Replace your clutch on the mechanical fan. I change mine whenever I change a water pump, just my personal preferance but it seems to work for me. I was running 2 electric fans but I switched back to the mechanical because it helps my AC run cooler, more air over the condensor. It should feel like a windstorm
under your hood when hot also when hot your fan should stop almost immediately when you stop the motor.

you do bring up a good point
the mech. fan does have some resistance
and the electric fan seems to only come on when the temp is near that last white line before the red line
shroud is in tact and original

Efan should be turning on about 218F. Can u verify temp with a infrared point-n-shot aimed at the t-stat cover? Always a chance the gauge/sending unit is wacked. If u don't know how old the fan clutch is, probably need to replace it.

Even after an engine rebuild, my '92 still ran hot.
Yeah, I tried the Cat replacement before that. Lots of other stuff, like you have done, too.
It ended up being in the head, even after rebuild. Another head solved the problem.

ok -
so far I have heard:
mech fan
* which has some resistance when I try to rotate it
efan
* doesn't turn on until its almost red lined
catalytic converter
* been getting a cabon like discharge from exhaust (NOT oil)
* inside the cab I hear a different "inhale like sound" similar to a vacuum leak
(but there isn't a vacuum leak)
last but not least - the inability to get over 40 is not addressed...
sorry i am soo critical - but i am seriously about to sell this P O

I think you have a clogged cat which would explain the high temperatures and inability go past 40mph. If you just want to be pi$$y because someone can't exactly diagnose YOUR problem over the 'net for FREE, then sell the
POS and GO AWAY.

easy trigger - same team
Just disappointed that I have put over 3 thousand dollars over the cost of what I paid for the heep and its sat in the drive way for the better part of the last year.
It has nothing to do with anyone here
Infact everyone replying has been a heaven send
Sorry if I came off too brisk - I just want my Jeep to do more than be a paperweight with a jeep logo ESPECIALLY with the amount of time in the shop and the wrench time I've put in it.
