my 97 jeep cherokee keeps overheating......it overheated and blew the first engine we are on the second engine and it just keep overheating the gauges were faulty so we put new gauges in along with the new engine and still it over heats! any ideas on how to stop this or how to help it without blowing another engine?

did you flush the cooling system meaning the radiator and heater core,did you replace the fan clutch?

we did flush the radiator and the fan clutch is what we are working on right now but it seems to be fine and everything is working the way it should.

start the jeep turn the heat on if no heat comes out you have a air pocket and the system needs to be burped. this will cause the engine to overheat very fast

yes that is also a reason for over heating,you will need to start it with the radiator cap off and let it comeup to temp so the tstat opens and lets any air out

i ljust changed my t stat and w/p last week and after i was all done ready to go play i drove maybe five blocks n it overheated and shut down on me. because of a air pocket

The radiator is the heart of the cooling system. They can get so crudded up, that no amount of flushing will do any good. Is your rad 13 years old? Has the coolant been changed every 2 years? May need to have the rad "rodded out" or replaced. Again, it's the heart of the cooling system. It's also the biggest pain to repair/replace/inspect.......so people save it for last when it's most likely the overheat culprit on 10+ year old XJ's.

sorry it took me soooo long to log back in...but i have put in a new radiator and a new fan and it still overheats! replace temp gauge and just picked up a water pump today! it sucks because everytime its just me and my two year old it overheats or the gauge shoots up to hot and check gauge light come on and it shuts off!!! im at my whits end now if this water pump doesnt work then i dont know where to go from here!

Install that water pump, and let us know. Also, is the new radiator a stock OE replacement or an all metal 2 or 3 row radiator? Plus, if worst is worst, you may have clogged water jackets.. but usually unlikely. Check your t-stat, even if its new because those things can be bad from the store. Just pull it and boil it in water. Make sure your electric fan is coming on. I couldnt suggest a warped head or blown head gasket unless the engine is used. I hope you figure out your problem!

ok now im stumped! put in the new water pump and put in a second new temp gauge and it drove fine the first two days then today went to got to the store and it overheated...next idea is hood vents but thats major work....i just dont know what else to do or change.....

When u replaced engine did u get a complete engine or reuse old parts like the head? Have u tried runin truck without t-stat? Can even try flushin motor again without t-stat installed cause dirt & debris can cause it to malfunction. I recently been goin through similar experience but I'm missing fan schrode for clutch fan so I have to run A/C or heat to run electric fan.

try this once park it on an incline where the front is higher than the back and take the cap off and start it run it for 10 to 20 min to see if you have anymore air in the system a freind of mine went thrue the same thing as you till he did this and fixed the problem
