Duly noted and researched further...the spring was actually a coil installed at the factory to prevent the hose from collapsing during coolant filling. Since they couldn't run the engine, they pulled a vacuum on the cooling system and the coil kept the hose from collapsing under that pressure. So thanks for the correction and now I've learned something new, which is good!
