Over heating in 4wd!
Ok. I got the Tank on a 4WD road covered in river rock last weekend, and put him in 4H then 4L and within 10/15 min of both, the temp light was on and the coolant reservoir was boiling over! But I had no problems going over passes at 70+ mph for 3 hours on the way home. What gives?
Any thoughts?

if you have no problems at 70,then either you have blockage on the inlet to the a/c cond,or the electric fan is not coming on,it is also possible the mechanical fan is not working good,it sounds like an air flow problem.

It just started smoking a little too, so I opened the air filter and there is oil in it. the fans seem fine though. would a radiator flush possibly clear out the blockage?

Try checking air flow threw the A/C coil and radiator coil and fan clutch going bad. I am thanking like mixed89 it a air flow problem. Being it happen at very slow speeds

when you say you have one fan,you mean you have the mechanical fan right, and you do not have the electric fan? you are suppose to have both fans,if you do not, that is your problem.

X2 The electric fan will come on and give more cooling. Your mechanical fan only covers half of the long skinny radiator. It works OK at 70 mph because the air is pushed through uniformly at a higher rate than the fans can do anyway and all the way across the radiator. Make sure that when you are done, you have shrouds for both fans.

I figured the speed helped with the airflow but I wasn't sure about the second fan. The driver side half of the radiator does not have a fan.

I found that some of the aftermarket fans did not have enough pulling power to keep the engine cool. I ended up replacing my bad e/fan after several attempts with different aftermarket fans with a stock e/fan from another XJ in the jy. I would just try and get a replacement stock e/fan. unless someone else knows of a good aftermarket fan??
