Its not bad to drop a trans but getting it back in is sometimes a nightmare. If you do the best way I found on the XJ's is to put the torque converter in and then bolt the motor up. Then bolt the flex plate to the converter. I have done it many ways and this seams to be the easiest way for me. I think you have to pull the spark plug so there is no compression on that cylinder to check for the noise.

Agrree with that, redo your rear main and pump while your there, just to be safe!!

I had a knock in the 4.0 in my old 89 XJ and it ended up being a bad #6 hole being way out of round. It would go away when you put rpm's on it. We found it when we put in a new motor. The motor had 156 K on it.
