Default One krazy question???

I'm looking to buy a 94 XJ. It's 4.0L, aut but 2wd. Now it has a 97 engine and tranny, but the owner says it has a voltage problem and it might be the voltage regulator. So far I know, that its inside the alternator. am I wrong? or can anybody share some light on that subject???

Thanks for your help in advance!!!

I ask because I'm looking at that XJ but it sounded "funny" trying to tell me the voltage regulator was an external part. I think its shady, but I might go to check it tomorow.

i will add this, there are alt sold for that year that say voltage controlled externaly,I was just looking at schematics and they all show internal,I am going to look further, let me know when you look at it,it is possible it could be external, pcm converts voltage to 5 volts for sensors.
I wanted to know a bit more so I did some edumacation reading on the subject, the voltage reg is located internal to the alt,but the pcm also controls voltage by regulating the the alt output,on newer models there is a temp sensor located next to the battery the senses temp and regulates alt output to maintain temp, the pcm also regulates voltages to sensors by using a voltage converter.
I guess they both manage voltage, the alt puts out,and the pcm makes sure the battery does not melt. Your question is directed to the normal voltage reg, maybe they are refering to the pcm operation of the system.

Cool

I thought voltage regulators on most chrysler/jeep products was located internal to the pcm after about 1988/89 ??

i have never seen a voltage regulator mounted externally on one that new make sure he shows exactly were it is before you get to far into it could be a shady deal
