One day, no brakes, need some advice
High mileage stock 93 Cherokee Sport. Brakes worked until this year. Good brakes front and back. For a number of years, they would be fine at one stop then the next, the pedal would slowly sink. If I pumped it once, the pedal would stay. Never lost any fluid.
Then one day this year after stopping it a few times and while coming to another stop, they went to the floor, no brakes. Took it to a mechanic and the mech crunched my Jeep driving it into the bay (no brakes, go figure) so they gave me money and my Jeep back (it isn't worth much except to me). They said it was the master cylinder so I got another one and bled the master cylinder but not the whole system. I know I need to do that but I have been trying to fix the brakes so I can at least get it into the garage to work on it instead of in the snow.
I have worked on cars in the past with air in the lines and they are usually just mushy, not non-existent.
Same thing, pedal goes to the floor with absolutely no resistance. I get a short squirt out of the front reservoir initially putting on the brakes.
So a couple of things I am wondering. Could my rear brake pads be so out of spec that the rear brakes are traveling full distance without hitting the drums? If so, why would this happen one day when the brakes worked that day? Would I get any resistance if this were true?
Just looking for someone that might know what the problem is.
