Default Wont Shut Off/Gauges stay on

Okay I went out today and my battery was dead in the Jeep. Then I drove it and went to shut it off and the key wouldnt turn it off. The mileage and most of the gauges are staying on also. WTF is going on? I had to pull the fuel pump relay out to kill the thing. I cant figure out why the dash is staying on. Any info would help.

top of the column behind the guage cluster, there is a rod that runs from the lock cylinder to the ignition switch. make sure the rod moves back and forth when the key is turned on and off.

Okay with it running and in park I turn the key off, It still runs like normal. I can put the key swtich one notch foward and put it into reverse and it kills it. IS there some kind of relay for that?

Would it be the ignition switch bad? It has something to do with the shifter rod that goes to the ignition switch.

Anywhere you know to have a write up on it? I would say it has to be the ign switch.
