Default ignition switch prob

My ignition switch will turn only to the run position and then stop. I tried every thing I could think of. Is it a broken switch or somthing else? Thanks

It could be the switch or it could be the lockring lock, tumbler, etc.
What you can do is lower your colum down where you can get to the ignition switch easier and look at it along with the cable from your shifter. In the colum kust opposite your tumbler is a spring loaded actuater that allows the lockring to engage,it could be bad also.
You can see everything from the outside except the lockring.

It is mostlikely the switch itself.

Get a replacement switch.
Remove lower dash trim- The part that goes all the way across (with ashtray)
Best if you can move the auto shifter back for this.
Several phillips head screws along the top.
Remove ashtray.
One screw inside ashtray.
Two screw under the dash right nest to each kick panel.
Pop panel loose.
One electrical connector on passenger's side...disconnect.
May be a relay panel on the driver's side...two screws.
Then unvelcro the wiper delay relay.
Remove panel from dash area.

Put shifter back. Turn switch so you can remove keys.

Dropping the column is a must.
Move driver's seat back.
TWO flanged nuts under dash..undo and drop column.

The ignition switch is bolted to the topside of the coulmn BUT the high beam switch needs to be taken off FIRST.

One NUT and one screw. Warning: They are different sizes. You're not going nuts.
Remember thier location.
Remove these two pieces of hardware and carefully extract the swtich from the column.
Disconnecting the wires is not necessary.

Now you have access to the ignition switch.
Two more pieces of hardware...remove them also.

The switch needs to be pulled straight UP and off the rod that goes up to the tumbler.

Now you can disconnect the two wiring harness connectors.
One at a time. Remember which one went first and then reverse the order for installation.

NEW SWITCH:
Install the connectors in the reversed order.
Slide switch over the actuator rod.
SNUG the mounting hardware.

Did you notice the slotted mounting holes???
Time to adjust the switch.
Use the original switch as a guide..a starting point, if you will.
Some finite adjustments can be made.

Make sure to fully tighten the fasteners before proceeding.

Re-installation of high beam switch.
Push actuator rod into the nose of the switch.
Snug mounting hardware.

Did you notice the slotted holes???
DEJA VU!!!
HINT: The more slack you take out, the quicker your high beams snap on.

Make sure that BOTH switches are adjusted properly, and a re tight before buttoning up the dash.

Wow thanks for the right up! Well for the next couple days I wont have time to work on it. So for now I think I will hook up a push button switch to the starter relay and just use that for starting until I have time to tear into the column. Will this work for a temp fix? If so were is the starter relay located? Thanks again for the write up.

it is located next to the battery, little silver relay, just follow all the wires. Your positive goes to the starter and starter relay.

What wire would I hook the switch up to? In my manuals wiring diagram there is a wire that goes from the ignition switch (start position) to the relay. All I would have to do is cut that wire hook it up to the switch and and 12v source correct.
