Old Man Emu
Got a couple questions.
1) Whats the best place to buy Old Man Emu parts. I've been looking at http://www.rocky-road.com/xjome.html but i'm not sure about it. I've tried searching threads for Old Man Emu but the words are to short to search.
2)If you get a SYE, will it it work for any size lift?
3)If you get 3" lift coils and springs, do you use spacers and longer shackles to go higher? Or do you get bigger springs?

you an do the lift either way as for the sye its not really necessary for the smaller lify kits tc drop brackets can offer a less expensive way to restore drive shaft angles

Well I recently bought a 98 and the PO put on 2" spacers and shackles. I have heard that the later year models were touchy with vibes at lower lifts. And I want to go up to 3" with OME coils springs and shocks. So if I got an SYE and later decided to add spacers/shackles, would I just need a longer driveshaft?

You can get the lift and just about all the advice you need from www.DPGOffroad.com. Owner is Dirk, he drives an XJ and is easily the most knowledgeable person I have spoken to about anything XJ. Plus he won't push you to buy stuff, but he'll tell you what you need to know. Excellent customer service too. CHeck out the web site & give him a call.

Dirk has gotten my buisness on more than one occasion.
Also, you are correct regarding the later model years requiring an SYE at lower lift heights. I believe it was some time in '96 that the t-cases got a longer output shaft. The longer shaft makes a better lever to act on the t-case internals, creating vibrations.
My '97 required an SYE at less than 2" of lift. The vibrations were not bad, and I would assume a lot of folks would have just run it that way but I was not going to put up with that in a daily driver as vibs in a driveshaft or internal to the t-case have got to be doing a greater damage than simply annoying the driver. A hack and tap is an economical way to get by, but, if you are going to keep the rig a while just do it right the first time and get a short shaft kit and new driveshaft. My hack and tap last a very long time, but, they do wear out (~60k miles) and destroy the flange.
If I were lifting my rig from the get go, I would purchase a set of shackle relocation brackets along with a longer set of shackles before I did anything. A would measure how much that lifted the rig, then order leafs and coils to get the rig at the desired height.
My guess is, doing it that way with OME would result in ordering 2" lift leafs and 3" lift coils, and possibly a few 3/8" coil spacers to get it leveled out.
AT 3" of lift you really need to think about adjustable control arms and trackbar. I would advise going with a double shear track bar.
Without those components your flex will be limited by the stock peices.
Then again, if you plan on going over 3" in the future, you may be better off leaving that stuff alone and putting the money towards a long arm kit.
Happy shopping.
