Ok i know its a stupid question...
I am not at home to check and i am ordering new gaskets... can anyone tell me what STOCK diff the front was in an 1987 cherokee limited? it has the 4.0 if that helps? i know i can just look at it and match the pictures but I am not at home....

yep gasket maker..... got the RTV red, got some RTV red all over me and the garage floor, but it work great.
I am sure you can find a tutorial better than what I am abou tto say there...
Remove the cover, clean everything good (I used a rasor blade and some clean rags) make sure everything is dry.
Apply a small bead of gasket on the edge of the cover (I went around the bolt holes)
Wait a minute or so that the gasket start skinning, put the cover back on and hand tighten the bolts. wait a couple of hours and torque the bolts in a criss-cross way.
Refill your oil the next morning... (some will argue that you don;t really need to wait...)
If it is stock it is most likely the Dana 35 (IIRC dana 44 was on some 88-89 with the tow package) in the back and definitely the dana 30 in the front
