I have an 89 Limited, im sure you most likely have

Dana 30 in the front.
Dana 35 in the rear.

..use gasket maker.

yep gasket maker..... got the RTV red, got some RTV red all over me and the garage floor, but it work great.
I am sure you can find a tutorial better than what I am abou tto say there...
Remove the cover, clean everything good (I used a rasor blade and some clean rags) make sure everything is dry.
Apply a small bead of gasket on the edge of the cover (I went around the bolt holes)
Wait a minute or so that the gasket start skinning, put the cover back on and hand tighten the bolts. wait a couple of hours and torque the bolts in a criss-cross way.
Refill your oil the next morning... (some will argue that you don;t really need to wait...)

If it is stock it is most likely the Dana 35 (IIRC dana 44 was on some 88-89 with the tow package) in the back and definitely the dana 30 in the front
