Default oil smells like gas

I changed the oil in my xj a few days ago and noticed it smelled like gas?

Anyone know why? Any ideas?

Flooding injectors and/or bad rings.

Agree.

A wet/dry compression test would rule out the rings.

Does the engine ever "stumble" when you start it? If it does, that can indicate a leaky fuel injector and if that is the case, it takes a few seconds for the engine to burn off the excess fuel upon startup.

Not to be stupid but what is a wet/dry compression test? Where would I get one? My oil smells like gas, does stumble a bit on start but not blowing either white or black smoke. Thanks

Could be a crank vent system not working correctly.

I'd put my money on a stuck injector. When you shut the vehicle off all the pressure left in the fuel system leaks though the injector and seeps past the rings into the oil
