Default Oil Pump question

Hey got this 87 Cherokee Im finallydone replaceing the RearMainSeal and putting the new oil pan on.I put some oil in the pump around the gears before I put the pan back on but how should I prime the pump before I fire it up! My older buddy friend is tellin me to disconnect the center wire on my cap and crank it over a few times to let the pump prime. Is this a good idea or is their another way of doing it any help would be great. Thanks Again Guys

If you got the pan on, that's about the easiest way to do it. Crank it for about 10 seconds 3 times and then plug the center coil wire back in. Or, you could go nuts and pull the distributor out and prime the pump manually. I just did it the way your friend said.

CAUTION! If you try to prime it by just disconnecting the distributor lead, you're still cranking the engine under load because there's still engine compression even though it doesn't actually start. If you don't want to put a lot of wear on your main and rod bearings, not to mention the rest of the internals, you MUST crank the engine WITHOUT spark plugs installed. That way, there's no compression to place a load on the bearings, plus the engine will crank a lot faster, which will bring up the oil pressure faster. If you don't, you'll put about a year's worth of wear on your bearing surfaces long before the oil pressure registers on the guage.
