Default Oil problems

Well first off my name is Joe and I recently bought a 1991 jeep Cherokee to restore unfortunately my mechanical skills are somewhere between my 7 month old son and a monkey holding a wrench. 1 problem I am having is oil leaking from the valver cover I plan on fixing this Tuesday but another is there is oil leaking into the air filter box I think it is the PVC valve but when i tried to buy one at autozone they said it does have one it just has a an elbow(?) so any ideas what it could be also smoke is coming from the 2 plastic rings on top of the valve cover. Another thing I noticed is when I shift from drive to reverse the transmission make a loud thump. Also when I apply pressure to the gass pedal I can hear and feel a thump. Any ideas what it could be and how to fix it I really want to restore this jeep on my own. And I know a group like this should be able to help me out thanks in advance for any help you guys can give.

May I suggest that u go to Ebay and get a '91 XJ Factory Service Manual. If u want to learn how to wrench, learn some internal combustion engine theory and save some money/headaches working on an old car, a FSM will be money well spent.

Exclamation

The elbow has a small hole in it called a CCV valve. As long as you are removing the valve cover to replace the gasket you should clean the orifice with a small piece of wire or a paper clip. That should take care of the oil in the air box, it cured my problem!
