I just posted this for a very similar problem about air bag light.

"I have the same problem With my 98 XJ and I know exactly what my problem is. It's a bad connection behind the instrument cluster. When mine acts up I just give it a firm hit either on the dash above the instrument panel and if that doesn't work try hitting it just under the instrument panel. Try not to hit the clear lens or you may crack it. I have been to lazy to fix mine right. But it work for me for now."

Could be the oil sender, or it could be the connector to the sender. Give it a wiggle or better yet, disconnect it and check it out.

both my 01 and my 00 did this rapidly over the coursd of a few months...

was perfect 80 all the time... 40 minimum when on long road trips...
then 60 to 20 then 40 to 0

it was a scary moment. i guess its common.

i changed everything even the pump and pickup... at idle it would read 0 (when hot) but when driving it would read fine. only when i stopped it would go to 10 then a few seconds later drop to 0.

couldnt ever figure it out. let me know what you got, cause i just put in a new stroker in my jeep and it only reads 20 to 60 it should be higher

Here's a thought:

I just went out to the garage and checked out a 4.0 block I've got for the stroker project.

I'll bet the "clog" occurs in the 90* fitting that the sender screws on to. The threaded hole in the block that the 90* fitting screws into is large enough that I can stick my pinky into it. It must be about 1/4" pipe thread. I'll bet the oil sender is 1/8" pipe thread at the brass fitting.
