I did some research and I think my oil pressure sending unit is going out. Tell me what you think.
When the jeep is at idle the oil pressure guage shows 40, while driving it shows 80. Is this the fault of the sending unit? If so, where is it located so it can be replaced? Thanks.

See the lil booger that is by the top of the oil filter and to the left of the distributor cap.

Thats normal , the oil pressure should raise as the engine RPM increases , what you are saying is exactly how mine runs and has for years, be happy you have good oil pressure. I have seen them much lower.

I know the pressure should increase as the rpm increases, but at highway speeds with the rpm just above 2000 the oil pressure gauge is pegged out at 80, is that normal? i just never remember seeing do that.

Chili, what yours is reading is exactly what mine reads for idle and highway rpm. It has happily read like this for 60K miles and 4 years of faithful service. I basically look for it to read around 40 at idle and to rise when I goose the skinney pedal or take it up to highway rpm. For the stock oil pressure gauge to say any less, would worry me or more, would be a plus.

Mine may run a little high because I use 10W-40 oil. I believe all XJs were recommended to run 10W-30 by the manufacturer.
