Default oil pressure

So, up here in MN it is a balmy 20 deg. and when I start my jeep it starts and runs just fine no noise or anything but my oil pressure jumps to 80 psi.
once the engine is warm if I turn it off, and restart it the pressure goes back to normal 30-50 psi. any thougths? should I be concerned? I called the dealership and they said if it sounds like it is running good don't worry that it is just a dummy gauge? 140 bucks installed (some sensor)

As long as it runs fine and you know oil is circulating I wouldn't worry too much about it. Like they said, the Oil Pressure Sending Unit is probably just going south.

But $140 installed? I guess they don't call them "stealerships" for nothing! The part is like $20 at Advance and takes 2 minutes to put on.

I agree that high oil pressure readings are generally not real and most of the time are related to a faulty oil pressure sending unit. Failure of this sending unit is very common.

I suggest you skip having them install it and do it yourself. 15 minute job. BUT I would buy it from Jeep, as aftermarket oil pressure sending units are not always a good bet for reliability and especially longevity. Well worth a few extra bucks for a Mopar part here.

x2 I cheaped out and bought an AutoZone unit... big mistake. I have random fluctuations and what not. Get the dealer part. Or I've also heard NAPA has good replacement switches.

That's about normal. Personally I wouldn't mess with it.

Replace the oil pressure sending unit. It is not likely that you are actually at 40 psi at HOT idle. Buy it from Jeep.
