Default oil pan install question

i installed the oil pan a week ago when i put a hole in it but it leaked because i tried to use rtv only. bad idea

so now i have it all out again. cleaned it up. and went and bought the cork gasket kit. my question is this. would it be wise to use a thin layer of rtv on both sides of the gasket when i install it? i want to make sure it doesnt leak again.

Cork gasket? Yes. At minimum get a good bead around the corners as this is where they typically don't seal all that great.

i might even smear some on the outside two where the two peices meet. kinda like when it squeezes out of a diff cover or a transfer case and leaves that nice bead. then just smooth it out alil with your finger.

by the way go to pep boys its better i work there (in michigan)

i believe you're only supposed to put rtv on the pan side of the gasket. That's what i do, i put a bead on the pan, and place the gasket on top, flip it upside down on a flat surface overnight to set, then install the pan. Easy!

Put rtv on both sides with corn. Installed it and let it sit like 3 hrs and it hasn't leaked yet.... Knock on wood
