I have an oil leak coming from the oil filter housing, that stupid extension from the block to the oil filter. I have tried a lot to replace the seal. I soaked it with PB Blaster and tried it and it would not move. I thought it did but I think it stripped. I have looked everywhere to find help online everyone has bolts where you use a standard wrench but I have to use a 5/8ths allen key. Is it possible to cut it off and replace it. I feel I have no other option but buy a new engine.

When you say its "stripped" are you referring to the threads or the top of the bolt? In other words...you cannot unfasten because its rounded over -OR- you cannot re-install because the threads are worn.
You say a 5/8" Allen....its actually a T-60 Torx.
There were two different head styles on the 4.0L a T-60 Torx and a 9/16" HEX.
Oh, and one more thing...they are a PITA to get off...at least the first time.

sorry it is a 9/16ths I cannot even see the head of the bolt because it is so far in the engine. If i put the wrench back in there is a lot of play if you try and loosen it but there is no play when you tighten it. Drilling the bolt is not possible unless you remove the engine. The problem is I need to remove it before i can replace anything.

Here`s how I finally got mine off after struggling for weeks every other way (From an earlier post):
OK..Here`s my latest plan...I`m sure I`ll get a few warning posts about metal filings in the engine but I`m hoping since the adapter tilts downward and there will be a flow of oil that way and I`m using a very thin bladed Sawz-All that there should be no metal finding it`s way up stream thru the thick oil.
First step is to go to the local junkyard and obtain a new (used) filter adapter. I`d suggest getting one off a Grand Cherokee as they have easy access to these things.(This is Important because the Grand Cherokee has like 6 inches of room to reach this thing unlike the Cherokee) .This is the adpater I got last weekend for $10:

Here is a view of the adapter with the big bolt removed:

Now here is my plan..I intend to cut across the adapter stuck on my Jeep about the point of the redline and only as far across as it goes:

As you can see from the following image cutting in this spot and only that far across will remove the thicker head of the bolt. Once this is cut the top of the bolt will just pull off and once that is off the adapter itself will simply pull off the engine block leaving a good portion of the bolt sticking out with the large hole in it. From that point it is simply a matter of putting another high grade bolt thru the hole in the adapter bolt and putting a pipe on it and turning it off or using a small pipe wrench on it (All this turned out to be unimportant as without the adapter the bolt just turned freely)..I would imagine without the adapter and it`s gaskets around it and the resistance of the bolt head the bolt will turn easier..In any event with the adapter itself gone I will have a lot of room to get at the remaining bolt.

Once I cut thru the thing in this manner the bolt simply turned out with my fingers. Just take your time and BE CAREFUL as there are some hard lines in this area you need to work around. But I had no problem reaching between them.

How did you get the bolt off the adapter you got off the Grand Cherokee? Why not just use the method you used to get the bolt off the adapter from the Grand Cherokee on the adapter on your Cherokee, that way you don't even have to buy the adapter off of the Grand CherokeeOriginally Posted by Programbo
