Default oil leak from hell

Hello fellow xjers. I have a problem. I had what seemed to be a RMS leak, but now not sure. I replace the RMS twice and the leak is still there. Its dripping from the inside of the bell housing. I checked the valve cover gasket, oil fillter o rings, OPSU, and distributer, and all looks dry. I cleaned the motor and the block ia clean. New one piece oil pan gasket also. I have no clue what it could be. ANY & ALL advice will be helpful. Thanks

This was my first time doing this sort of job. I followed all directions to a T. I used the tab thing to help guide the seal, used soap and oil to help slide the seal in place. First i bought a double seal, then the parts guy said its a single lip, so i did both. I drove it for about an hour around town a few days and nothing changed.

I haven't tackled the RMS on my XJ yet... it leaks.. but it does not drip.. so I don't worry about it yet..

But I have sold "sleeve and seal" sets for different applications.. you might look into that..

Default rms help

The oil leaks onto the exhaust and stinks up the cab pretty bad. Its not a heavy leak, just drips alot, when the motors running. Once the motor cools, the leak stops. A buddy had also mentioned a sleeve. How much work is involved?

Are you sure that you didn't put it in backwards? also did you put the sealer in the corners like needed? Yes, there is a front and a rear. I have seen them put in backwards many times. I have to admit I even did it ones and learned my lesson.

what motor? 4.0?

if its a i6 and hitting the exhaust you might have that RMS not seated correctly in a small spot.. There is a special tool to remove and install the upper RMS correctly and isnt expensive at all.

Geez, I'd begin here:

I'd be looking up ABOVE first, and VERIFYING the source of the oil leak YOURSELF.

Everybody, who doesn't own or have to pay for or perform your vehicle repairs, loves to poke their noggin UNDER the Jeep and come out bearing the false bad news that your RMS is leaking.

Many mechanics, friends, people on Jeep forums who can’t see your Jeep from where they’re at, and good old Uncle Bob seem to enjoy telling you it’s the rear main seal. Has a catastrophic ring to it, doesn’t it?

A simple leak at the back of the valve cover or other source could produce the same symptoms. You don’t need to be a mechanic to figure this out. If you have good eyesight and a dim flashlight, you’re good to go on your own. Don't jump on the RMS/oil pan gasket bandwagon right off the bat.

Almost any oil leak on your 4.0 is gonna drip from the RMS area for two simple reasons.

First off, the engine sits nose-up and any oil will run back to the RMS area. Secondly, the RMS area is also the lowest point on the engine. Simple physics and the old plumber's adage apply here. "$hit flows downhill".

Valve cover gasket, oil pressure sending unit, oil filter adapter seals and distributor gasket, in that order, have to be eliminated as possibilities first.

I noticed that it would be the valve cover gasket as thats the only pkace close enough to the exhaust to leak like that and get the burning unless his rms is gushing enough to produce that blow back to the exhaust pipe by the bellhousing

You're there. Check it out. If you replace the valve cover gasket, use onl the $45 Felpro one and use no sealer on it.
