Which oil and filter you running
Seems like a very simple and basic question, but I just picked up my 99 and few months a go and its time to change the oil and I have no idea what is in the Jeep currently. I live in CO and temps are in the 90's but will taper off to the 70's by Sep. I have 150k miles, just want to get an idea of what you guys run for oil. Cheapo, synthetic, 10w/30, 5w/30.. Thanks

Attachment 57926 sorry guy but use the search this has been done way to much.
Sorry but that was a bs answer and I hate when people say that. I mean it takes just as much effort to give him the answer than to tell him to search for it right?

For oil you want to use heavier weight 10w-30 most of the year and lighter weight 5w-30 in the winter.
As far as brands I have heard that castrol, penzoil, and valvoline are really good and stay away from quaker state. But I'm not sure. There is alot of this high mileage oil out there but I'm not sure how much better they are and if worth the $.
I also heard that synthetic oils are not good for Jeeps but better for smaller higher rev engines in the newer cars. Filters I don't know anything about seems to be not as important as they oil.

Thanks guys for the input. Time to go to Oriely's.
BTW I did do a search using google "which oil" site:www.cherokeeforum.com did not find the answer I was looking for.
basically put any search criteria in qoutes then use the site:www.cherokeeforum.com ( no spaces between the : and the w). Best search for any site.

Go with a napa gold filter. Many folks even report a slight increase in oil pressure with this filter. I, for one, saw an increase when I switched.

napa gold and rotella 15/40. yes it is a diesel oil but perectly fine for gas engines. I have run rotella or Delo in all my engines for 40 years NEVER an oil related issue.

Haven't changed mine since I got it(it was changed the day before I bought it) but it has 10w 30 Mobile1 full synthetic, and a Mobil1 filter in it also. This has served me well so far.

The guy asked a legitimate question. I'm sure there have been lots of things done way too much on this forum.

Read http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/motor-oil-101/ very very good. This will explain everything that ha to do with oil. Synthetic is not bad for our jeeps. It cleans everything up inside and reveals some leaks because it doesn't thicken as much as dino oil when cold. It is better for our engines however. Better startup lubrication. Sticks to parts well. More "slippery". And it does not break down like dino oil. Lasts longer. Only reason people knock it is cause the end up leaking through seals that need replacing anyways.

I'm with slick on this one. Use 5W-30 in the winter, 10W-30 in the summer. I use Wix filters, as they're six bucks at O'Reilly's here. As for oil type, stick with synthetic. As for brand, go with whatever you want. I will use Mobil 1 full synthetic from here on out. It's $26/5 qts. at wally world.
