So I just bought my XJ last weekend and the first thing I did was change the oil because there was no sticker for the last time it had been changed. Well, I went to auto zone and got oil and a filter, and then upon pulling the filter off discovered that it was a different size than the one that the book said was the right one, and I was pretty sure was the same on all 4.0's. Ended up having to use a Fram TG3600. What gives? Has someone swapped something out on this motor or is the manual at both O'Reillys and Autozone wrong?

Many XJ owners have gone to a larger capacity oil filter, which your previous owner probably did. It is common to use a Wix 51515 (my choice) or the equivalent NAPA Gold.

If you search the forum you will find discussions on this. The one thing you'll find is that Frame filters are NOT recommended. It is recommended that you get rid of that Frame filter and go with a Wix/NAPA, or a Mopar small filter.

1085 Napa, 51085 Wix, 090 Mopar. No FRAM!

51515 Wix if you wanna hold a bit more oil.

Don't worry about losing much oil if any when you change the filter. That POS Fram with the junky anti-drainback valve will be empty!!

FWIW, a Motorcraft FL-1A fits perfect and can be bought just about anywhere.

I've used the FL-1A and it worked just fine. And I think it's cheaper than the WIX pr NAPA.

The regular NAPA gold is the 1085. the oversize is the 1515

Walmart has the 090 Mopar filter. Price is pretty good too!

Hmmm...........a Ford filter on a Jeep. Something just doesn't seem right about that.

^^^^^^^ A+ ^^^^^^^ good idea to overfill crankcase by 1/2 quart if using the large filter.

Crankcase should read full on the dipstick if the filter is worth a hoot. If the anti-drainback valve is doing it's job, the 1/2 quart will remain in the filter overnight.

Not to Hijack this, but can you remove the filter to just change it or is it full of oil when the Jeep is off? Sounds like a Noob question but I've never had a vehicle with the filter up that high.

and if you ever put fram again in your jeep you migth in a tree somewhere in the vast desert of NM...

If it's a good filter, it's full of oil. Be ready.

If it's Fram or other crappy filter, hardly any oil will come out because it's all drained back in to the oil pan....
