Default Oil filter removal tool

N00b mechanic here again :/
I'm looking to change my oil, and last time I used the "screwdriver and full retard" option which was fun until I realised I'd smashed the oil pressure sensor.
I reckon the right tool will cost less than the oil sensor, so does anyone have any recommendations on which type is best?

screwdriver!?

anyway, in your case I'd remove the oil pressure sending unit beforehand lol.
There are many types available, just look at the access you have to the filter. Strap-types can go around, I use a 'pliers' type, (more because I can use it for other stuff as well). No experience with the ' cap' types in the XJ that go unto the top of the filter. For me the universal ' adjustable' ones (the one with three ' legs' that should suit a range of diamters) didn't really work.
So, pick any.

That's all I also use to take mine off. You don't have to over tighten them when you put it on. Plus put a little clean oil on the gasket will also help it come off the next time.

Filter pliers work great. Screw driver and hammer should be last resort.

I personally like the "cap" type (the ones you put on the end of a ratchet) filter wrenches:

It also gets you about as far away from the sending unit as possible since it goes on the end of the filer, especially if you are using an "over-sized" filter (Motorcraft FL-1A, Wix 51515, Purolator PL-30001, Bosch 3500, Baldwin B2, etc.).

The only disadvantage I've found with "cap" wrenches is that they are very specific as to what size oil filter they will fit. I used a Motorcraft FL-1A filter once which has a different end than most filters and ended up having to use the "screwdriver" method to get it off so it is good to have a "strap" type wrench around for those kinds of situations.

The reason I love jeeps is that you can get to the filter and easily remove it by hand. I have a bad habit of over tightening by hand but never used a wrench or screwdriver to get it off. My advice buy a cheep filter wrench and be gentle when tightening (by hand) so you can get it off easily next time.
