Default Oil filter problems.

I am changing the oil on my 1993 jeep cherokee. The oil filter is on so tight i can not get it off. I tried oil filter rench and the screw driver method. WHen i did the screw driver it rip the filter in half all the way up to the front plate. Any ideas of how to get the rest the filter off?

I moved your thread to the proper section. You can use a big pair of channel locks on the rim of the old filter, and that should get it off. I bet someone hooked you up with a nice dry gasket, those are special!!! HTH!!

THIS is why I don't crank the crap outta them when I put a new one back on!
All you have to do is tighten it down till it "feels" good resistance.
Be sure and lube the gasket with some new oil before putting on.
The gasket will do the rest.
In other words, you can get it off by hand next time.
Oh, and make sure the old gasket is completely removed, if not = 5Q oil on ground!
And I have never had a leak there with this method either

most filters say 3/4 turn once the gasket touches the plate...
