We have a damaged oil filter adaptor on our 1995 jeep cherokee 4L six cylinder. It appears there is a large star nut at the end of the adaptor and If I had the proper socket I could remove my damaged adaptor and replace it with a new one. As anyone tried to do this. Is it hard to do. Are there any pitfalls that you know of. My jeep has been laid up for four weeks with a leaky oil filter.

Ok, the adapter can be removed if you, removed the passenger side motor mount and find a short enough torx bit to fit the adapter nut and allow fitment of your socket wrench. Honastly, I took it to a mechanic that I deal with on a regular basis and he fixed mine. Make sure you get the gasket and nut kit when you fix it. The gasket kits you can by at say ans Auto Zone or Advanced Auto only come with one. The kit you get from Jeep has 2 or 3. This is the one you want. Good Luck!!

x2. My trusted mechanic did mine for I think around $50, plus the $5 I spent at the dealer for the O rings. Not worth fighting with.

Check this link out to another thread on this topic, my post is #19 where I put a pic of a tool you need to pick up and it makes this very easy.

I did mine this spring, was not a hard job. I bought the o-ring kit from the local Jeep dealer ($6) and a T-60 Torx 1/2" drive socket from Advance Auto Parts ($6 Gear Wrench brand) The T-60 popped out of the scocket real easy and I used a 1/2" wrench with a cheater bar to loosen the adaptor bolt. 2X on removing the oil filter first. No need to remove the engine mount!
