Default Offroad : Do and Don't

Hi Brand new to 4 wheeldrive/offroading... I Want to take it off road or in snow, climbing hills... but afraid to get stuck. I got no clue what I can or can't do. Where it can and can't go. which type of terain should I avoid...

So Is there someone that can point me in the rights direction and give a couple heads up of what my 92 cheroke can and can't do. Anything I should avoid and so on and any offroading tips!

Appreciate it !

well you arent going to know what you are able to go through until you try and go through it. But i would just stay away from deep water with a stock jeep. Getting stuck isnt to bad just as long as you have someone to pull you out. other then that have fun.

I definately concure with sk8ertht540, mudding with a buddy is alot more fun and safer and its funny if u get to pull his/her *** out of the mud! If you've got the money though a winch is HUGELY great investment, I can't tell you how many times my Warn 8000 has hauled my *** out of the fire, well mud actually. But with ure general question, experience is the best way to learn so get ure *** out there and get stuck! Good luck.

Got bored so i thought i might go a little more into detail what ure 92 should be able to do. If you've got completely stock options on it i would stay away from rocks for a while, mud is a staple for all 4x4ing, depending on your tires and how deep it is of course. You want to keep your momentum up, cuz if you stop, ure pretty much screwed in most mud. If you dont have a lift kit or crawler kit watch our for REALLY rough terrain where you might get hung up or damage something vital if you dont have underbody gaurds.

Join a local club, find a local forum, meet some experienced wheelers and ask to go on their trail rides.

Here's a great video of what a stock Cherokee can do:

For a more practical approach a XJ is a very capable rig in stock form, I've wheeled mine every since it was stock. The best advice I can give is too never wheel alone and have someone who has wheeled before ride with you so they can instruct you on a monkey see monkey do.

Kinda like here....maybe.

As for more specific to your state, just google search your state and four wheeling clubs. Like this:

Colorado Four Wheeling Clubs
or...
Four Wheeling Clubs Colorado

only change your state to wherever you're from. I still need to get into one of these.

What strenght of winch should I consider? 3000lbs is not enough right ? Just browsing the used adds for one. Like a fun and very useful mod.

You will have to get it stuck once or twice to know your limits, even then you will be suprised sometimes !

You will be suprised also at just what a stock XJ can do !!...I sure Was !
