HI , I was wondering how far away from your jeep your remote will work . mine will only work if I am right next to my jeep , I tried new battery's and it did not help . all my other cars the remote will work at lest 30 feet away . do I have a bad remote or the receiver part in my jeep is bad . Thanks for any info.

My old Jeep ya probably ~ 30' away, I would guess since yours works at all then it's OK. On my late model pickup with Onstar I can unlock (or lock) the doors via my phone even if I'm on the other side of the earth but I guess the question would be "why?".

Has any body else had this problem that you have to be right next to the jeep for it to work . I only have one remote so I dont know if it is the remote or the receiver .

older XJs (<97) use an IR system, i believe. My 96's was crap and worked maybe 20 feet away at best, but the good thing was it was easier to program new fobs, ive been told.
Newer, Phase II XJs (97+) use the more modern RF remote like the WJ, i belive. but the problem is you need the DRM2 tool to program a new fob.
Since yours is an 01 id imagine it would work a little better than what you say it does. maybe the sensor in the jeep is going bad?

I thought about using a different system but I'd like to stay with the factory system . when I say I need to be next to the jeep I can't be more then 5 feet away from it , if it worked 20 feet away that would be okay .

You're lucky it works at all.
My remote works when it wants to which is usually seldom. When it does work, about 15 to 20 feet at best.
I seem to remember seeing a remote TSB a bunch of years ago but can't find it now.
I seem to remember when i re-did my headliner the remote receiver circuitry is located in the dome light housing. Might want to check it out and re-seat the connectors there and see if it helps.
I got two remotes with my XJ. Do you have a second one and if so did you try it?

Mine comes and goes as far as distance goes. Frankly I think mine is more the remote as far as that goes. Be 20 feet away, it won't work, and then I press the button again harder and it will. Replacing the batteries in the remote did not seem to help. My locks working, from both the remote and the switch, come and go too. Work like 90% of the time. When they don't work I can here clicking on the passenger side. My research seems to indicate that the passenger side is what operates the locks. Always seemed a little weird to me. You would think everything would be on the master control on the driver's door. One of these days I will see if I can fix it. Low on the list. Have a couple extra ones I grabbed out of boneyards and thinking about trying the resoldering trick.
