Default Odd Tranny Shift Question

When its really cold in the mornings I tend to shift the tranny into the 1-2 position to rev it a little more so it warms when I drive. For some reason, it stays in first gear. When I put into either 3 or drive, it shifts into 2nd and 3rd and 4th and its perfectly fine. What could cause the transmission to not shift to 2nd gear in the 1-2 position? My jeep is whats in my name. Stock drivetrain. It doesn't bother me, I'm just curious.

That's how it was designed..........Try red-lining the engine in 1, then it will bang into 2.

I know I've gotten it almost to redline in first. I'll have to try to get it to redline and see if it shifts. I just dont wanna blow the engine. I have almost 233,000 on it, so its definitely worn out. Thanks for the info though. I thought I would have to redline it, but I figured I would ask first to be safe.

Don't bother redlining it to prove the point. It's normal. LOL.

The Power/Comfort switchon the dash- what setting do you have it on, and if in Power does the light come on inside the switch?

I always have it set to the comfort because I don't need it to rev any more than normal driving and suck up my gas. It works, but the light doesn't go on. Is it bad that it doesn't light up? I never really minded it as long as it works.

Actually it doesn't help with economy at all in the comfort mode. Quite possibly the contrary. The factory defaulted the later XJs to the power mode FWIW.In the Power mode, it will stay in gear longer and could be used instead of holding it in 1/2 like you described. .

The light should go on in the Power mode only. Yours doesn't? Do your backup lights work?

I just checked today, the light does go on in power mode. And yes, my backup lights do work. Should I just leave the switch in power mode from now on? Would that help my fuel economy?

It's working properly then. Leave it in Power mode.

I'll either take a test drive later today or between tomorrow and monday. I'll post after I drive. Right now my dad is buffing the driver side quarter panel, so I cant drive it. I would buff it, but he's the pro. I would probably burn up the paint.

Running it with the power option on does make it run a little better I think. Its easier to get up hills and it doesn't bog down. I left a parking lot today with the power switch on and slammed it to the floor and I actually spun the tires a little got up to 55 pretty quick too. Then my death wobble kicked in. Damn I hate that. I never drive over 45 though so I don't worry about it. It passed inspection just fine.

Results are as expected. Don't know about off the line acceleration, though. They just drive so much better in the Power mode and the fuel economy won't get worse either.

Yeah, I feel it already. The shift response is just so much better.

Comfort mode = Gramma mode.
