I have a 96 XJ that is having a very odd starting issue(at least to me). When you turn the key all you get is a click which I though was the starter so I had the wife crank it while I smacked the starter with a hammer. But I noticed the click was not coming from the starter, the click was the AC clutch engaging every time you crank, the AC is also OFF. The starter relay is clicking, that is as far as I have gotten trying to figure this out. Any ideas?

Is the ac compressor locked up, or is the hvac set to defrost or bi level?
