Default O2 sensor?

Hey all. Trying to get my Dads Cherokee up and running again. Been sitting a while. Couple questions;
First a little history. Had the battery tested and it was bad so replaced. Autozone said it was 10 years old! So I guess we got our moneys worth there. Got it running and there was a check gauges light. With a little help from the google machine, I diagnosed a bad oil pressure sensor. Replaced that and the light went off. Great! After cleaning it up a bit and driving it a little. The check engine light went on. Got a PO171 code. Looking through all the possibilities, I found that both exhaust clamps before and after the catylitic converter were completely rusted out and I replaced those, thinking a possible exhaust leak. Also poored sea foam and some fresh gas hoping to clean up injectors a bit. And finally, replaced the upstream O2 sensor. It looked like the original, the downstream looked newer. So I cleared the codes and drove it around some. Couple days later check engine light came back on. This time reading PO135. Oxygen sensor bank 1.

So, when I originally replaced the O2 sensor, I had just walked into autozone gave them make, model, year and got the O2 sensor they said was the right one. Now I’m reading all this about some brands could be a problem and wondering if it was even the correct one. The connector was the same but the sensor end did look a little different than the original. Part #23179

Not really sure what the problem is exactly now? Thoughts? Thanks in advance

That P0135 is for the O2 sensor heater circuit. It's very possible you got a bad sensor right out of the box, it happens all the time with aftermarket parts, especially from Autozone. The sensor itself might be fine, but its internal heater is faulty.

First, check the fuse for the O2 sensor heater circuit. If that's good, the new sensor you just put in is likely the dud. Swap it for another one, or better yet, get a NTK/NGK brand sensor (the OEM manufacturer). Don't use Bosch or store brands for this.

When I first got my '00 14 years ago pretty sure I had a P0135.
Turned out one of the fuses, 15 amp I believe, had blown in the PDC.
New fuse and haven't had a problem since.

Just out of interest, why not Bosch?

Thank you for the replies. I will definitely double check the fuse for that. I’m not trying to sound argumentative but the one that I bought from Autozone was NTK 23179. Is this not a good replacement or am I missing something. Is it possible that this was a dud right out of the box? Agin, I’ll check the fuse first

Also, can someone tell me is this Cherokee a sport, xj or classic? And how can you tell. Searching the VIN doesn’t tell me.

Most of them say if it was a sport, classic, limited somewhere on the outside of the jeep. Unless the decals have been removed, or its a lower trim level. Dealer can run the Vin. They're all XJ's
Just fixed a p0135 on my 96, bought the NTK upstream(only because it was a plug n play, no splicing) , I had luck with their products in the past, but not so much lately, code came right back. Bought the bosch sensor(had to use the old plug and wire the sensor to it) and it worked great. Have been using bosch o2 sensors, fuel pumps, for a long time, but the direct fit ones are nowhere to be found.

Well I had a chance to get out there and look today. The fuse was not blown. Of course it wasn’t gonna be that easy. Sooooo, now what? Take back the NTK sensor and swap it out for another NTK? Or Bosch? Two very conflicting recommendations here. I was so hoping it was gonna be the fuse, ugh!

ok great so they are all XJ. Sport, classic, limited is the trim package. As far as I can tell, mechanically the trim package should have no bearing on ordering parts

Replace VIN# with yours and should pop up build sheet.

The correct thing to do is test the wiring. You'll need a multimeter to make sure you're getting power to the sensor, ground continuity and signal continuity to the ecm. The pinouts can be found in factory service manuals or online. Check out www.charm.li
