Replace it with a new NTK Oxygen Sensor.

A forum rule.
Illegal Activity
5. Do not talk about illegal activity on this forum. This includes illegal drugs, parties, wheeling, internet use, etc. Violators of this rule will be dealt with on a case by case basis. This rule includes the discussion of removing catalytic convertors, this is illegal and not allowed to be discussed on this site.

removing your cat is it legal by federal law regardless of the state law Massachusetts only has a visual inspection for vehicles older than 1996 so it's the same deal but it still illegal by federal law

IT IS NOT ILLEGAL TO REMOVE YOUR CATALYTIC CONVERTER. IT IS ILLEGAL TO DRIVE A VEHICLE ON A PUBLIC ROAD THAT HAS HAD IT'S CONVERTER REMOVED.
I know it's splitting hairs but, if you want to talk about what's illegal and what's not, We've got to get the facts straight.
From EHOW.COM concerning Texas Laws.
"Texas law exempts vehicles and engines used exclusively for auto racing, research and development, or vocational instruction. It also exempts farm vehicles made before 2000, and vehicles or engines being exported from the United States."
Again, it is NOT illegal to remove your catalytic converter Per se. There are exemptions to every rule.

Personally I think that sucks. Putten' the "dumb" in freedom is part of what make our country great! Bad ideas can be examined and made better. That's a clear 4th amendment violation , in my opinion. We shouldn't feel gagged by the feds.

This isn't about the Feds. The feds haven't said we can't talk about it. CherokeeForum (and I think it's smart) has decided that we will do what we can to avoid advancing the image that we, as off-roaders and vehicle enthusiasts, do not care about the environment or other "socially responsible" topics. We really do need to be careful what we talk about or appear to support. We don't need to be doing stupid things and we certainly don't need to be showing or laughing about stupid things that go on by people who have no intelligence.
We just have to be careful not to just go off ***** nilly saying things are illegal when they aren't. Our Moderators and administrators need to be careful. I was just pointing out that removing the cat is NOT automatically illegal. And they can't just say we can't talk about it.

Going back to the OP original question. It is smartest to replace the O2 sensor. You can get a bung welded back in fairly cheap. If it isn't damaged you can still use the O2 sensor. But either way your engine works most efficiently with an 02 sensor and a catalytic converter. Running your engine without will only net you AT MOST an additional 5 horses and a few extra foot pounds of torque. Gas mileage will suck though. And the long arm of the law can be pretty expensive. It's not really worth the risk.
