Question NSS trouble

I'm new to this, but I just bought a 93 Cherokee country and realized how much i like this jeep. I'm sellen my daily driver for this bad boy. When I bought it it wouldn't start. Replaced starter and battery. It started. Once. Then playing with the gears I could get it to work in Neutral a couple times while trying to start in general. Changed the oil, thinking i could just start it in neutral until I cleaned the NSS and replaced it. It started in Park this time. NEVER TO START AGAIN!!!!!!! So I took the NSS off, cleaned all the gunk and polished the connections and di-electric greased em, put it all back together. plugged it in, and now it won't start. It's very difficult to get the NSS back on and I'm nearly certain that it's not flush on the transmission. There is a lot of resistance on the square shaped rod it sits on. I'm wondering why now the fan doesn't even turn on? The car should theoretically start right? I'm frustrated and help would be greatly appreciated!

When you put the NSS on, it has to be aligned a certain way. Did you do this?

I just found this on here. It's dirty, but you see that line just to the left of the shaft? How it lines up parallel. That's what you need to do. Good Luck.

Thanks for the info. No I didn't. Tomorrow morning I'll get to work on it and hopefully get that working. The rod as I remember when I put it back on was very crooked. Do I rotate the entire rod? Because the actual NSS has very little play left and right. I'll have pics tomorrow. Also is there any way to get it back on easier? I could barely get it to slide on at all and its certainly not on all the way.

I don't remember exactly, maybe you loosen the adjusting bolt in order to move it. Try installing it with the jeep in neutral, make sure your wheels are chocked with E brake on and what not. You could try hitting that shaft with some sand paper and wd-40 to make it go back on easier.

So I got under there and it was really crooked, so i removed the nss and in the process broke the plastic backing. so now im trying to bypass it and see if that even fixes the problem of not starting in the first place. ive gotta shell out the cash now i suppose im having trouble uploading pics sorry

Actually I think that bypass is incorrect. Others have said it's the bottom two middle ones but that doesn't work either. Cant get the bugger to start

You can remove the starter and have it tested at an auto parts store if you're that ambitious.

Stuff usually breaks when you're working on an older vehicle, happened to me just this weekend.

hahaha well i dropped a couple of those new hundred dollar bills and installed the NSS. DRUM ROLL PLEASE.. wont start i did all of the left and right tweaks with it vertically in neutral. Not to mention spent about an hour filing the inside groove of the nss to get it to slide on when i try to start it, sometimes the fan kicks on, and then dies after a second or two, and sometimes the fan doesn't kick on. Im stumped. im guessing its the starter? battery has 12.2 V, it never tries to turn over.
GAHHHHHHHHH

Make sure your battery and ground cables and clamps are clean, shiny and tight.
Next- Try shorting the two large terminals on the starter with a screwdriver. Does the starter turn over?
If yes- put a voltmeter on the small, third terminal on the starter, other test lead on ground. You should get battery voltage at that small terminal when the key is turned to start. Is there voltage there?
If not, see post #33 here:https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/neu...180724/index3/
to check the start relay for voltage and ground.
