Default Nss switch

are their different switches for a 98 Cherokee I'm finding prices on the net from 55.00 up to 380.00. It's a 4wd with auto tran. Also is their a sure way to tell if it is an Nss switch problem.

Yes, some of the OEM replacement switches are priced very high. This is the reason most people try and take them apart and clean them because they get gummed up inside and stick. Some of the cheaper chinese knock offs are in the lower price range.

I attempted to clean mine and it broke trying to get it off. I bought a cheap eBay one and it failed on me 10 months later. I bought another slightly more expensive one with a 10 year warranty and knock wood, it's been fine. I keep a paper clip in the center console in case it fails so I can bypass the switch.

Symptoms would be intermittent starting, works one time, doesn't the next. Then having to wiggle the shifter or put it into neutral to get it started. Reverse lights may stop working as well. Search the site, tons of info on it as it's a common problem. Most people have success cleaning them. There is a write up on how to do it if you search the site and google.

Is the Jeep not starting? You can pull the switch apart and clean it or you can buy a used OEM switch from someone who parts Jeeps and has already cleaned it for you. (Like me.)

lol

PM me if you're interested in that. I sell cleaned, OEM NSS switches for $60 shipped.

It is very simple to clean your NSS switch. A couple sockets and ten dollars in auto zone cleaning supplies is all it takes. Its worth giving it a shot cleaning it yourself before buying a new one. I was able to bring mine back from the dead over a year ago and its still going strong.

If you live up in the north with salty roads, then you won't get it off in one piece. But it is worth an attempt to try and clean it though.

So far with 262K I can wiggle my shifter in park or neutral and still get it started but the first time it happened it had me confounded. Lucky to have the internet to figure it out.

thanks for all the info guys. I live in eastern Iowa so road salt is a major thing,I don't even want to get started on that. I cracked it getting it off, after I stripped the threads prying on the nut. Found one for 66.00 with a good warranty. Think I will keep that paper clip in the console also. any tricks to putting the new one back on. Thanks again.

I live in Pennsylvania. I was able to remove my NSS, and clean it. And then I bought one of LowRange2's NSS as a spare.

Going in was easy. You'll need to tie off the connector up near where it connects so it doesn't fall down while you're installing it. I put a little anti-seize on the shaft but that's all I did.
