NP231 rattle

hey guys i recently purchased my 97 a week ago and today on the way home from work as i was entering the highway, a rattling sound started coming from what sounded like the t-case. further along it occasionally had a moderate clunk and then after a louder clunk it disappeared. any thoughts on this, id appreciate the help

oh also it originally had a np242, and was swapped in

so that happened awhile ago and havent done anything worthy of 4x4...until today and i cant shift to 4hi or 4lo, its as if theres no gear there at all and the shifter has all the play in the world

bump...and from what i read this may be just a disconnected linkage and if it were a blown tcase the shifter wouldnt move at all? can i just get confirmation on this?
