you should not shift into low when moving on ether
both TC work the same
the 242 has an extra position

if you have a 231, how hard and what parts would be needed to switch to the 242?

grands use a viscous coupler, those are different cases. the 242 has a differential in fulltime mode that supposedly has torque-sensing characteristics. i've found that it works like a full open diff.

you would be better off swapping the TC
its not just one part you would need to change the main shaft and all the gears

I think you are confusing full time and part time
in part time you are locked in
full time has a diff with planetary gears and a torque clutch that will get trashed if you work it to hard

i'm not.

New Venture documents show the 242 as being rated at 1486 ft. lbs. of torque. This is probably determined based on Full-Time position usage. Experience would say that this is a very conservative number for all other positions.

just that the full time position can be damaged
more easy than the part time
because of the planetary gears

if get into a position that you spin both front tires hard and not the back
you can damage the mechanism

The 242 is a bit stronger than the 231, you can tell that by the NP/NVG numbering system... That's why the 241 is stronger than the 231.
And it's a geared for around a 48/52 torque split while in F/T, but the torque split remains while in P/T, with the exception that it locks all 4 wheels in regardless of slippage. It technically isn't "P/T"per se, but rather "acts" like a P/T case.
And if you want to do a swap, swap in a 241OR, it was built to withstand a Cummings diesel engine, and is one stout lil T/C.
