There ya go Mike. Mod should Sticky this thread or add it in a FAQ.

I posted this in another 242 vs 231 thread.

The major difference with the NP242 is that in 4WD Fulltime the transfer case is 'differentiated" meaning the outer front wheel can spin faster/slower than the rear without binding. With a 231 you'd feel the vehicle jerks/binds as it turns.

The 231 needs a surface where the tire can slip and not bind, like dirt/snow for example whereas the 242 does not. (in fulltime)

I've got the np231 so is it a bad idea to run in 4H on paved roads? I like the extra assurance on icy roads but I don't wann do any damage.

If it's all ice or a surface that will allow tire spin then you'll be ok. If the surface wont allow slippage you'll experience driveline bind when not going perfectly straight and could result in damage.

I LOVE my 242 in michigan its great the full time is basicly just AWD. It really helps going up hills and not going sideways upon acceleration

i was curious about the two when i got my jeep.
i found this article:
http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/np242.htm

http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/np231.htm

Novak makes some nice adapters for them but the article is worth reading.
and for the dude that thinks the np242 is made for trailer queens..he needs to read up as well!

n -meaning used only in flat towing with all 4 wheel on the ground or in a situation were the front wheels are on a dolly or tow-truck, helps take the stress off your drivetrain, so you dont have to remove the driveshafts , having front locking hubs is a bonis

i have the 231 and like it my buddy has the 242 and likes his. the only problem i see with the 242 is that the coupler used to split the drive power can be week and slightly expensive when it is time to replace

the fulltime unit isnt a viscous coupler. and you dont have to shift into N on the tcase, although you do shift through it going in and out of low.

what are they using then this is the case on the grand's as well and i though they used a coupler. and you cant just shift from high to low with out breaking the link between the two.

N is irrelevant you still need to stop before shifting from H to L
just like the 231

oh ok in the 231 though you can shift on the fly as long as it is lower than 10 miles per hour and you have to go in to neutral so you don't brake the case when you go to low. maybe the 242 is different then. what do they use to have the all wheel drive then in the 242
