notchy steering

notchy steering
at low speed on sharp turns the steering has a notchy, slightly jerky feel. What might be causing this (1998 XJ Classic, 4.0)

i hav'nt had it aligned, the tires seem to be wearing alright, the reservoir is full, i thought the belt may have been slipping but i don't think so

if the belt was slipping you'd hear it.
and id check wheel bearings and tie rod ends.
definitely get it aligned because if anything like that is bad they wont align it and tell you what needs to be replaced before they can align it.
