Is this normal?
Not sure if I attached the picture correctly. But if I did, it's a pict of my brakes on a 93 XJ. It appears it may have 89 brakes but working on that. What this is a picture showing is about 1/4 of the top of the "plunger" inside my calipers is showing. I wouldn't think it was but not sure.

RED ALERT !!
Something deffinately wrong! Top of cali isn't even engaged in cali bracket. Inner pad is barely touching.
Were these calis even on and working on this vehicle?

I can't tell what's wrong there. The bracket should go over the lip on the caliper on the left side, which would mean that your caliper is barely being held on. Can you post another picture of the left side of that assembly?

If the rotors and pads were to small it would look like this as well. Say you need 12" rotors and ended up with 11" rotors and matching pads. If the new rotors and pads are the same as what you took off then you need new calipers.
It also doesnt look like that caliper is seated all the way down do you have it bolted in? Although it doesnt look like it would sit correctly either way

I drove it bout 75 miles after picking it up like this. Could tell the brakes weren't great. It looks to me that the rotor is too small for starters among other problems. I'm learning from looking at the pictures on the net that the brake system is from a 89 YJ on this 95 XJ. A rotor for a 95 XJ is too tall to work so I'm guessing the front axle is probably 89ish also. Gonna a get under it and look at any markings on it to get a year on it as well. Main question was bout the piston being bout a 1/4 way above the rotor. Didn't think any of this looked right. Thanks

Doesn't look to be much room between the rotor and caliper bracket on the spindle/knuckle for anything much larger. The problem is either those calipers aren't for that axle or they're not even bolted on (properly)
I wouldn't drive another 75 inches with it that way.
Someone was sure looking out for you on your trip home.

The caliper isn't installed right, plus you have old pads on new rotors. Old pads will have a wear pattern worn into them and won't be seated properly on the rotor face giving you poor braking.

Arent the edges of the caliper supposed to go under on one end and flush on the other?
In the first pic, is the caliper bolted in? If the bolts are in fact in than yes you have the wrong caliper.
I am still curious about the rotor size....

OP why are you evading the big issue here and not answering our questions? You may not need to replace the calipers, but we need a picture or you need to go look and see if the caliper fits in the mount.
