Default Noob 4wd problems

Okay, so I fully expect to get a little burned on this question but I am well prepared. I'm rather new to the 4wd scene, but not new to vehicles in general so I'm not completely lost.

Anyway, my question is, my 4wd lever will not full go back down. It's almost like the @entire thing just shifted backwards. Each drive setting will engage, except the 4wd low which will only engage if i hold the lever back with alot of force. Here's some pictures:

I tried to search, but wasn't quite sure what to search for. so if anyone could help a brother out, I would appreciate it!

Thanks,
Fowler

edit: also, sorry for how dirty all that **** is. lol
edit #2: ALSO, its the np231 transfer case I believe, if that makes a difference.

You need to get under her and adjust the shift linkage. Do a search for that so you'll get pics and such. It'll fix your problem

Or, you can get it here, along with instructions on how to shift it properly.

Transfer Case Linkage Adjustment
Straight from the FSM:

SHIFT LINKAGE ADJUSTMENT
(1) Shift transfer case into 4L position. (make sure your shifter is fully in the 4L position)
(2) Raise vehicle.
(3) Loosen lock bolt on adjusting trunnion (Fig.
87).
(4) Be sure linkage rod slides freely in trunnion.
Clean rod and apply spray lube if necessary.
(5) Verify that transfer case range lever is fully
engaged in 4L position. (you can do this under the vehicle at the transfer case)
(6) Tighten adjusting trunnion lock bolt.
(7) Lower vehicle

Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual.

"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I let off the gas, throw the lever, and then tap the gas and let off.

4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".

oh, and one more thing...If i follow the instructions I have been so graciously handed...my 4wd lever will not stay in 4 Lo unless held there by force, the plastic will not allow the lever to go back any further to fully engage...Can i still do this? find a strong *** dude to hold the lever back for a while? lol

Adjust per the instructions and you'll be fine. Couldn't hurt to check your trans and engine mounts first......
