Hi everybody , my first post here , I recently got my first XJ, it’s a 1996 , 4.0l sport, automatic . It’s in good condition , imported from New Mexico . But I lost the key on my travels brining it up . Steering wheels locked , and no key to start it or lock the doors, anybody have solutions other than paying 150$ for a new cut key ? Would any other 1996 key work for the ignition atleast ?

 

Not just any key will work. You could go to a junkyard and pull the ignition cylinder from one that has a key, that's perhaps cheaper. Cheapest route is installing a push-button ignition switch, but there is a bit of know-how and wiring modifications on top of it not being secure, but that's probably your cheapest way to go

 

If you are going to need to lock the Jeep then I think you should just bite the bullet and spend the $150. You could buy a new switch or go the boneyard route but still won't have the key for the doors. Now if you don't care about locking the doors then......

$42 for a new lock cylinder with keys, but the key isn't going to match the door. You could pull the cylinder and have a locksmith cut a new key for it, probably for less than $150. Search online, you might find places (often dealers) who will cut a new key for cheaper. You just need to send them the VIN and proof that you own the vehicle, such as a copy of the title and your drivers license.

 

You can always try a few different locksmiths. Honestly, its going to cost either way. Have you tried contacting the previous owner to see if they may still have a spare?
