I have a 02 4.7 V8 AWD quadratec WJ with 114k miles. Since I purchased it I've noticed that at low speeds I hear a low pitched humming almost metal on metal noise. At higher speeds, it becomes more of a whining vibration. The noise is coming From the front end and is so noticeable the radio has to be turned up a good amount to not hear it. There is no decrease in drivability just more annoying than anything. Does anyone have an idea as to what this could be??

 

Sounds like a wheel bearing going out to me. Have you raised the front tires off the ground and checked for play in the wheels / odd noises while turning them by hand?

 

No haven't tried that yet. My friend has a AWD explorer thatched the same exact noise I'm starting to think that it may be the front differential maybe? I'll jack the front end up and check for play tomorrow. Thanks.
