Hey Cruise. So far nothing. I'm in the middle of moving across town. I had moved my jeep to make room for the uhaul truck then later that night I wanted to move it back and I couldn't. I visually inspected it and sure enough there is oil caked on the wires and whatnot. So later this week I wanted to take it apart like it was mentioned and hit it with some brake cleaner. Question though....

I was told to remove the starter that the + terminal in the battery had to be disconnected? Is that right?

Ive got an 88 with the same intermitent not start problem that has now become an absolute no start problem. the starter has been rebuilt in the past month(do to trans line getting cut and draing atf all over it)lol. full charge on battery, full tune up (cap, rotor, wires plugs and filters) within 6 months, fuel filter at 6 months, all connections are good also. it cranks but wont fire up. going to check the nss, fuel pressure, and cps today. That is what i have read anyway...am i missing somthing obvious?

Have you done Cruisers tips yet? If not do them before throwing money at the problem chances are it is something as easy as a dirty ground, thats what my problem was, figured it out $400 later with a lot of new parts

IIRC the Solenoid is a crimped, (hopefully sealed), housing and unfortunately can't be dissembled and cleaned. The "smack to go" could be ether the solonoid, or brushes sticking. OR! Once I got tricked. My Battery cable on the solonoid was loose so that smacking the starter would make it go. You might also be sure the mounting bolts are tight. Jeeps aside, smacking/working is often the contacts in the solonoid. (Chevy/Toyota....

Was thinking. I suppose if you smack and try it and it goes I might think brushes. If you need to hold the key over on start, then smack it maybe more likely the solonoid.

Jack up the front of the jeep so the suspension hangs, then work the pan out. Sometimes you have to lower it again just a bit to get everything in the right place.
