Default No start high idle?

My jeep is doing this weird thing. the battery will act dead then it will come back to life? Now when my jeep starts it idles at 2500 rpm? I have no clue what is causing this. Is it my alternator? a sensor. I'm lost...

OK newb (JK) here's the deal. We are more than willing to help you out but when you don't give us the basic info we simply can't.

We need to know the basic's

1) What year is the jeep?

2) 4 cylinder (rare) or 4.0 6 banger?

3) Mileage on the Jeep?

4) Any recent work done to the jeep?

Once we have this info we can then start to help you out.

Oh yeah, Sorry, It's just frusturating me. I have a 98 Cherokee Classic. with the 4.0 with about 155000 miles on it. I just replaced the front tierod and welded a new exhaust hanger on it but I disconnected the positive on the battery before doing any welding.

There we go now we can get going.

I would start with these few things:

Make sure the battery cables and battery terminals are good and clean.

Check the battery ground connection at the block and the smaller one going to the fender.

Check the connections at the starter making sure they are clean and tight.

If that doesn't seem to help then have the battery load tested.

Your alternator is a battery charger and accessory power supply it has nothing to do with starting the vehicle.

Report back after you have done these things and we'll go from there. There are other things to check but the things I listed won't cost you a dime at this point.

Sorry I was eating ribs couldn't type. Well it is possible that the TPS isn't seeing the correct voltage needed. But don't worry about that until you have look at the things I listed above. Getting it starting right is the first thing you want to do. And that may just cure the high idle issue as well. One thing at a time my friend, one thing at a time.

It really sounds like a connection issue/ground issue at the battery.

See what happens and we'll go from there.

Have a good night it's still early here.......

I checked my grounds, I checked my starter. everything is tight. I'm waiting on my buddy to get here so we can go to advanced to test my battery.

Tight doesn't mean S-H-I-T. Take all the connections off clean them with a wire brush or a dremel so they shine, also clean the areas they sit on to a shine and clean the bolts. Then put everything back on and try again.

So I took my battery to advanced and I hate dealing with the guys there. He "checked" my battery and said it was good but I took a Brand new battery out of a vehicle that was in my driveway and put it in my jeep. Needless to say, all of my issues seem to be fixed, I'll know for sure down the road but the Idle went back to normal and fired right up. I am going to take my battery to advanced again when I know my buddies dad is working and have him check the battery.

it still could have been a connection issue with your battery terminals. But hey at least it's running correctly now.

there is only a few people I actually trust at the local advanced auto... But I thank you for the help, I was absolutely clueless on what could have been causing the issue. I never think of the simple things.
