got a 95 jeep xj with the 4.0 in it every time you try to start it it either clicks like the battery is dead or all lights go off inside cabin when attempting to start. Also the jeep starts up and stays running when jumped with the jumper cables disconnected the battery the voltage is 14.6 alternator is charging and sorry before hooking the jumper cables on the battery voltage was 12.5 volts. could it be the cables are corroded inside or what and battery terminals were cleaned good.

 

inspect all grounds and connections to the battery. you’ve got a bad one somewhere.

 

ok so correct me if i am wrong negative side cables go to fender well and engine block behind alternator. The positive side cables go to under hood relay/fuse box, the starter, and alternator.

 

Yep. All grounds are.extremly important! Clean and shiny!
