Default No Speedometer, No Odometer. [Figured it out]

Hello everyone!

So as the title says, im dealing with a no speedometer no odometer situation. It use to work years ago. I actually remember when it went out. I was going around a roundabout and happen to be looking down to see the speedometer drop to zero. Go figure.

So heres where ive gotten so far. On the transmision side I have replaced the speed sensor, pinion gear, and even the plug going in to the sensor.
I thought it was probably the common pin issue with the instrument cluster so I pulled all that out and someone had already been in there and did the twist trick. So I cleaned them up and slightly twisted them in the other direction. No luck.
Ive tested the cluster itself, pressing the button while turning the ignition on and every thing lights up and cycles through including the speedometer and odometer. I would assume that the cluster itself is good.

At this point I must have an electrical issue somewhere. Pulled out the voltmeter and tested the plug into the speedsensor and (Now I'm just exploring at this point) when the ignition is on I get around 6volts on both the outer left and outer right pin and nothing in the center which is probably supposed to be that way. 99 sport.

So maybe, there's a ground issue or short somewhere that goes to the cluster? Maybe I can check the sockets that cluster plugs in to. Or check the grounds. I'm not familiar with the dash at all as far as those grounds.

Looking for advice at this point. I have a very rudementary electrical knowledge but im not color blind and i can follow instructions.

Any recommendations on this issue?

Thanks everyone,

I'm having hard time finding the wire schematics for it. I heard about the ground under the dash on the driverside but couldn't quite locate it. It's odd because everything else works except the speedometer and odometer. I'm thinking it has to be with the tree wires coming off the speed sensor.

Go here and download the FSM for your year (or closest to it). Section 8W has the wiring diagrams.

Well folks!

I figured it out, sooooo
I figured id take another look inside the tailshaft again. So pulled the speed sensor and the plastic pinion gear. I got a light in there and well there it was, some broken yellow plastic. The speedometer drive gear sepererated. If you didn't know I have a 2wd.

I guess theres alot of confusion out there when you say speedometer drive gear. So theres the speed sensor (VSS) and the speedometer pinion gear or I've seen it called the speedometer driven gear, the one everyone knows about (tire size etc.) And then that syncs up to the speedometer drive gear inside the tailshaft. That's what exploded for me. No speedometer. And I guess odometer too?

Anyways, that pretty much settles it for me. That part isnt available anywhere. My plan was to do a 4x4 conversion on this xj one day. Until then ill just have to guess how fast im going.

I think I might try out one of those cheap GPS speedometers, see how that works

Thanks for posting the detailed follow-up! I have a 1995 XJ with flaky speedo that I'm tinkering with. Found this page at https://www.intellitronix.com/produc...r-sending-unit that claims for $140 ...
The Intellitronix GPS Speedometer Sending Unit offers high-accuracy readouts and can be wired directly into your existing speedometer with a simple 3 wire hookup!
... works with any industry standard 4000, 8000 or 16000 pulse per mile or programmable speedometer.
