Default Speedometer Problems

I have been having speedometer problems that I cant resolve..It sarted with the speedometer quit working and check engine lite on. This is a 2001 Grand Cherokee 6 Cyl automatic 4 wheel drive. I replaced the sensor on the driver side of trans, reset the check engine lite. It worked for one day and it did the same thing. Took to the Chrysler dealer. He replaced the ABS wheel speed sensors and the speedometer module in the instrument cluster, about $400 later it worked for a day and quit. Now the dealer says the entire Instrument cluster needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Not wanting to pay the dealer for another fishing expedition I went to the junkyard got an instrument cluster and replaced myself. It worked fine for about 40 miles and then quit again. Has anyone had this issue and found a fix..

Is it just the speedometer, or the entire instrument cluster that is failing?

If just the speedometer, make sure your speedometer gear is in its housing correctly and not flopping around.

Another thing that could be affecting it is if you drive roughly, the electrical connections behind your cluster could be wearing from vibrations while driving. Just disconnect the battery, then stick a small flat head in each of the plug holes in the cluster plug, attempting to tighten up the teeth clamps so they'll seat better in the plug.

The loose connection makes sense because the issue is intermittent and the problem is just spčedometer. I will try that and post the result

I am a little confused about the speedometer gear. I have a 2001 4wd and I know older models have a sensor with the gear on transfer case. The only sensor that I have changed is the one on the side of transmission and that looks like it is magnetic. Could there be another sensor that I am overlooking
