Okay, the TC is locking and the 2nd solenoid is working, but the 1st one isn't. I got under the jeep, asked my friend to short the wires for me, I could hear it 'click' inside the tranny oil pan but it wasn't as strong as the other two were clicking..so that means I need a new solenoid and there is one more bad news for me, that my NSS is not working AT ALL. NO connectivity at ANY point what so ever

http://jeepin.com/features/nss/

Would this ^^ write up be of any help?
And how do we 'PRY' the washer lock tabs? :s

And the NSS doesn't interfere with the shifting, right?

I would fix the NSS first before replacing any solenoid.

The NSS tells the TCU in which gear the tranny is.

Good write-up, but someone has probably messed with the wires in your case.

I don't think so.. I mean, I can't see any extra wires coming out or going to the NSS, all extra I can see is that the starter relay has been grounded by the body.. I will try to get to the NSS, open it and see whats been up there..
And oh.. there was a continuity in the NSS between B and C when the shifter was in P, my friend pushed it back and forth a bit.. and it showed then.. I'm going to clean the NSS and see..

Okay, I'm BACK! but without any updates! Didn't have any time nor do I have any these days..

But I have an idea for now, since my jeep starts and doesn't care what the NSS says, what if I disconnect it? and try and see what happens in D?

according to this diagram:

According to the diagram there is no connectivity in ANY of the terminals in D, so D should work fine and it would tell us if its the NSS that is not letting the tranny shift properly or something else? Am I right in saying that?

I don't know why, but I personally think this thread is AWESOME. :P

If it's not working, disconnecting it would be the same, but u can try.

Since its not working correctly, I thought maybe its connecting to something when the shifter is D... i mean, its not supposed to give any continuity in D, but it might be giving so.. I didn't check the continuities with the shifter in D.. And the Jeep starts because the starter solenoid has been grounded by the body, originally it would have been grounded by the NSS when the shifter is in either P or N.. but since the NSS wasn't working, the starter relay was grounded by the GDFPO.

Did you take LOADS of pictures for posterity? Start a how-to thread.

Unfortunately, I couldn't but after a lot of testing and checking.. we were down to hit and trial method.

The mech changed the clutches just for the heck of it, we imported a used tranny computer (illegally :P), cleaned the valve body etc, fixed everything back and it didn't work. So we knew for sure that the TCU wasn't the problem, checked each and every sensor thoroughly, then we decided to find a used valve body, after a few days of searching through various HILUX trannies, we got the particular valve body and VOILA! it worked.

Now, one more question, can the Transfer Case have some sort of 'play' in it? I mean, when I change from R to D or D to R rapidly, I can feel and hear a clunk, it could be the differential or the shaft joints but just asking..

No, not the TC. It is either the U joints or the diff.
Actually could be the chain in the TC... but it would make the "clunk" without the "thud" if you know what i mean...
Check the exhaust pipe, shake it with your hands. Dou you have the original skid plate under the TC? That could be also.
I would like to know out of what year model of Toyota did the valve body match, and if they had the drain plug on the pan.

we didn't change the pan and things.. just the valve body, don't know about drain plugs..
They come from 1988 to 1997 Toyota Hilux autos / Toyota Landcruiser Prados.. exact designated model for the valve body is either 33-80 or 33-83. Will confirm by the mechanic and let you know.
