i know this has been posted before but it never recieved an answer. i have a 96 with aw-4 and just today i realized it doesnt shift into overdrive anymore. maybe torque converter clutch solenoid? anyone had this before. it shifts fine through every other gear just wont go into overdrive.

 

I don't know much about automatic transmissions, but could it be stuck in "3rd" gear, and its not shifting into overdrive on purpose?

 

i have 4th gear but not getting torque converter lock up. gonna change the torque converter clutch solenoid and see if that fixes it.

 

Even though you have 4th gear the 3rd gear position on the shifter only stops the tranny from shifting into overdrive, it still shifts all the way up to 4th. It confused me the first time I towed my wrangler.

 

put new tcc solenoid in and fixed it thanks for the ideas guys.

 

U had overdrive (4th) gear all along, just no "converter lock-up"?

 

Fourth gear IS overdrive (0.75:1 ratio). The third gear (1:1 ratio) position prevents the tranny from shifting into fourth but the torque converter still locks up. The torque converter lock can feel like an extra gear shift.

 

yes djb i had 4th gear just not lock up. but its working now
