Unhappy No heat in winter...

Hey guys. I tried finding a thread for it but I couldn't. I have a stock 2001 xj. My issue is that my ac/heater fan is off and comes on very rarely. I changed the resistor and that didn't work so I went for a new blower motor that worked for about a day. It doesn't work on fan settings 1,2,3,4. Any help is greatly apreciated.

Thank you!

Alex

A bad blower motor may have melted the plug to the resistor before you replaced blower motor. Check that first.

Would it be obvious to tell that is melted? I will check that! If it is how could I fix that? just splice in a new plug??

Thank you!!

If the resistor block connector is not damaged it might be a defective blower relay, located behind the glove box.

Roll the glove box down and you can get at it.

I checked the resistor connection it looked good. I also checked the blower connection and that seemed okay. I was driving today and the fan turned on and I turned it to setting 4 and it turned of and wouldn't blow on any setting.

Here's a schematic of your blower circuit.

Note that all blower speeds go through the blower relay.

Fuse F25 in the JB protects the blower relay control coil. If it blows the relay won't operate.

Fuse F6 in the PDC protects the blower motor via the relay.

Some folks go directly to the blower, remove the connector, and apply 12 volts to the blower pin A while providing a ground to pin B. If the blower works the issue is in the control circuit, if not, the blower is defective.

You may want to try shock therapy to the blower motor. With the ignition switch to ON/RUN, the mode selector to any setting except OFF, and the blower speed switch to any speed - open the hood and tap the end of the blower motor with a blunt instrument. If the blower starts working it's defective.

Look at the plug and you will see if it is defaced/melted. You can.buy another plug at any auto parts store and splice it in.

I've got a similar problem. Fan worked off & on for couple days then stopped all together. Fan motor (runs fine when straight wired to batt) plug shows around 11 volts until I hook fan back up, then drops to zero. Could that be the relay you mentioned? I'd never heard of it.

Roll down the glove box and wiggle the blower relay harness.

No luck?

Tap the top of the relay with the handle of a screwdriver.

No luck?

Replace the bloody relay. They're cheap.

What type of relay should I buy. Do you have a name so I can order it?

They're a common 40 Amp relay. Go to NAPA on line and search for it. O'reilly Auto Parts on line as well.

It's called a Blower Relay.
